Quiet Riot on Vinyl:-(

Quiet Riot on Vinyl:-(

I wanted to go for it and pull out the 1st press version of Quiet Riot Metal Health LP. And give it a full listen and attention. I remember absolutely loving the song “Metal Health (Bang Your Head)” It’s one of those metal tunes that really got me into metal have to understand I was 10 years old in 1983 when this came out.
Also thought Cum on Feel the “NoiZe” was great as well for a 10 year old brain this stuff was hard and original. As I got older listened to more music I realized that Cum on feel the noise was a cover by the band Slade and their version is much better.

As I put the record on the turntable on Side 1- 1st Song Bang your head 1st flushed in feelings of nostalgia then a few giggles as I sang along to just the Bang your head part because I don’t remember all the lyrics. lol  Then song 2 Cum on feel the Noize! again nostalgia. After that there is just nothing absolute junk every song on this album minus the 2 songs and 1 of them was a cover all suck!
This band was nothing special and what’s left today are the 2 songs that were great then that don’t hold up well at all today. Which leaves you with 8 other tunes that won’t even get your foot tapping as you listen. Even the last song “Thunderbird” which was their try at a ballad and even that is a fail.

In the 80’s ballads were big and most bands even the cheesiest ones pulled off 1 hit wonder ballads but Quiet Riot couldn’t even pull that off.
If they released their 1 song “(Bang Your Head) as a single and disappeared it would of been a better legacy.
Pretty sure one of the band members went on to WASP which I think did much better than this. Even though I don’t like WASP now and didn’t then.

Hunting down those rare or hard to find LP’s.

As certain bands/ albums age they can become increasingly hard to find and in some cases even records that aren’t all that old can also be hard to find or get ahold of. Usually because they were pressed/printed in limited supply.
Or they are just that good and have no re-issue dates ahead or maybe none coming at all.

This is the break down of my latest struggles getting a hold of hard to find LP’s.
I’ll start with my most recent find. That would be Obituary Cause Of Death originally released on September 19, 1990 their sophomore album follow up to the insanely excellent Slowly We Rot “Another tough one to find or get” I do have a 1st Press and a remaster press on CD of “Cause Of Death” but that isn’t LP. So first few tries on Ebay I should first say getting locally here in the states is really hard so bidding or buying this LP would have to be overseas which means the cost of album plus the expensive tracked overseas shipping costs. 1st attempt to bid on it through Ebay I lost. Went for it again on Ebay a few months later after building up some more patience and luck. But this time I used a bidding BOT called Auction Sniper. This is supposed to really up your chances at a win since it will start placing bids that very last second left of the items auction ending. Sweet! right? Well wrong I still lost:-( Even with a damn BOT!
Now that means I had to hunt it down and just buy the damn LP from someone that is hopefully willing to even sell it.
Onto my fav media community & collection storage discogs the ultimate of everything media.
I find the beauty on Vinyl by a rad seller that goes by hammersmashedface love it! Located in England. Those that are not in the know that “name” is a song from an old 90’s Cannibal Corpse Song their 1st ever single and a good song at that;-)
He has it shipped and I patiently await for it’s arrival! All the way from England to my humble home and Metalized Turntable of DEATH!
Cause Of Death

The album I was next looking for was a well.. no an excellently received album some argue their previous work is the better “Monolith of Inhumanity released 2012 also a hard one to find” but whatever The Anthropocene Extinction was only released in 2015 and is a mother fucker to get ahold of on LP. And for good damn reason it is FanFuckinGTastic Technical-Death Metal that will rip your soul to shreds even if they may be Vegans. Welcome Cattle Decapitation #2 to my fine collection. I may only have 2 in my LP collection but I do plan on adding more well at least 1 and if you read this then you know what I’m gunning for next;-)
This one shipped all the way from Germany so it could grace my collection with it’s greatness.

Then my hunt for Rings Of Saturn – Embryonic Anomaly this one was hard to find as well.
After quite some time searching I found it in France.
This RoS album was their 2nd and the line up is NOT what it is today the biggest thing about Anomaly is it was recorded with the original lineup of only three members while they were at the ages ranging from 16 to 18. The lead singer is not the one that graces the other excellent RoS albums Dingir, Lugal Ki En & Ultu Ulla.
This Album is great. I also have Ultu Ulla on LP as well and it’s awesome as hell!
rings_of_saturn-embryonic_anomaly_lp

I’m still looking to add Obituary Slowly We Rot LP. I Have the Picture disc but want the standard LP with Cover.

Rings Of Saturn- Dingir LP -also hard to find looking to add to collection at some point if anyone is willing to part with it.

Dragonforce – Inhuman Rampage  I’ll take this as Picture disc or Standard LP Sleeve!

Insanity  ‎– Death After Death Not exactly hard to find but it’s on my A.S,A,P list;-)

The Lost Boys (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) It’s not exactly hard to find or get but it is hard to find/get at a reasonable price!

Vinyl, Vinyl, Vinyl= More VINYL

Haven’t posted in some time now on me blog figured I should write about what I’ve been into for last few months. As the title suggests that is it been is adding more & more to my vinyl collection. I absolutely love my vinyl more so than my Laserdisc collection.

As I sit here writing this up I have Electric Wizard’s Dopethrone on the Turntable. What I think about Dopethrone as a record I may talk about later on maybe…
I’ve probably added a good 50+ to my collection in the last few months so I’m going to talk about the ones that impressed me the most.

Recently I hit a local Record store (Patrick’s Books & Music great guy if your local or not and in Pasco County give him a visit) in Hudson Florida and got a hold of a few interesting records a few that I really wanted in my collection Billy Joel Piano Man & Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon. Also got a great deal there on Morbid Angel’s latest album Kingdoms Distained and Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual.

The Billy Joel album is the one I want to talk about. It is a 1st pressing (1973 year I was born 45 years old.) so I was expecting it to sound crackled and not so good considering the cover was rough not ruined but was apart at the seam. Which I fixed with a hot glue gun and it looks very acceptable now.
I cleaned it up with my vinyl cleaning chemicals and brushes and towels to drop on the Turntable and hear that it sounds fantastic! It has minimal popping which a few more cleans should eliminate completely or clean enough to make them not audible.
Piano Man is a classic every Vinyl collection should have it.

For Fathers Day my daughters all gave me money for Planet Retro’s Dollar Holla day in St. Petersburg Florida.
I’m very lucky my girls always take care of us meaning their mother and I. We have been blessed that way.
At Planet Retro I found my favorite death metal bands LP picture disc signed by the 2 founding members John Tardy (Vocals) & Donald Tardy (Drums).
Obituary The Xecutioners Return.
The second I saw it hanging and then my friend pointed out it was signed I knew then it was going in my collection even if it wasn’t in the dollar record boxes:-)
20180701_143524
Xecutioners Return is actually an older album released in 2007. Of course I did get their latest self titled album Obituary and it is a great album it is one of my favorites right now was released last year 2017.
If you are adding death metal to your Vinyl collection Obituary better be in it especially their 1st album Slowly We Rot 1989 absolutely insane still on my top 10 best list and at the top of it. Will be expensive to get on Vinyl I got a hold of a picture disc. Right now cheapest I’ve found the standard black vinyl edition for is $60 some as high as $200.

Almost forgot had to come back to here to add the classic Slayer’s South Of Heaven 2013 LP Remaster/Re-Print.
This is seriously a fanFUCKINGtastic release it sounds phenomenal.
I am hearing things on this record I never heard on the tape or CD it’s really that damn good.
Every song is crisp the bass is solid and the tweets are going all in a tune that makes you want to mosh right there as your listening.
Amazon was selling this release the 2013 LP for a good price I suggest ordering it while they still have this version in stock I have no idea if the 2017 or 2018 LP sounds this good I know the pressing before 2013 was not as good.
The 2013 cover doesn’t have the Slayer logo on top left corner.
Slayer 2013 cover

On to newer bands that I recently discovered and am into these bands right now are either playing on my Turntable or in my cars CD player either way I love them!
1st band Archspire released their 1st album on CD only which I DO NOT have All Shall Align (2011)
These guys are from Canada and they are the best of the best when it comes to Technical Death Metal aka: Tech-Death.
My recent purchases on LP are their 2nd LP The Lucid Collective and their latest LP Relentless Mutation.

These guys are insanely hard & fast and no they aren’t using any electronic synths for the ultra fast speeds you hear. Tech-Death does not mean Techno it means technical.
They use advanced methods of playing.
I’m absolutely hooked these guys are the now and future of heavy metal. If you have never heard them and are into metal of any kind you owe it to yourself to experience this great band.
And if you can get on LP do it because they are limited releases. I was so impressed with this band not only did I buy the LP’s I also bought the CD’s as well.

Now onto something that has always fascinated me Space & Aliens.
Yes, I think they are out there and so do the guys who are in the band Rings Of Saturn.
This band sings about Aliens and space! How cool is that? They are considered Deathcore but me and many others have labeled them Aliencore music their latest album Ultu Ulla which is what I got on LP is awesome they are hard and fast and have a unique sound to them very different than you can probably imagine considering the type of music they do and it’s all about Aliens man!.. maybe not all.
Ulta Ulla

Their sound is incredible and the singer has a crazy voice I think it’s great. Even if your not into the Alien thing this is still some damn good metal and should be given a listen for sure. Ultu Ulla actually means “Time Immemorial’ in Sumerian Cuneiform”

Now onto the Doom and Gloom sound. These guys formed together from USA and Europe to start a band called Anopheli meaning Mosquito or good for nothing.
They are heavy and deep there is only 1 vocalist listed in the band but the vocals are shared between  a man and a woman.
And the cello is used in great form with this heavily made album. It’s about a man who died and is talking with Death as he is being led to the light or his judgement /final destination and Death thinks he knows men and their deeds but is learning he does not really know men at all.

The second I heard this it was a must for my Vinyl collection and if you can find it get it they are limited. The latest album is The Ache Of Want. I am desperately  trying to find and get their 1st LP A Hunger Rarely Sated I’m in touch with someone in Germany so I’ll see what happens.
It’s very deep beautiful but heavy as hell something that is hard to accomplish with this type of music but they achieved it and did it well.
This is another must listen.
Ache Of Want

As I complete this I am listening to Rings Of Saturn=Amazing

Honorable mentions on LP:
Morbid Angel Kingdoms Distained (2017)
(Classic) At The Gates Slaughter Of The Soul (1995) ( Full Fidelity LP) -This album is what set the standard for Melodic Death Metal.

B-Day Present this year from my children the Audio Technica Turntable.

First I must say my kids are the best they got this Turntable for me.
Quite a few years “5 Years” back I purchased a super chepo Encore Turntable that at time seemed fine.
Until I heard another Turntable that was older than mine but sounded 100x better:-(
Yes, I was sad I haven’t listened to Vinyl since the late 70’s to early 80’s so what I knew about a decent Turntable was absolutely nothing.
Not that I’m a pro now or a Vinyl sound Audiophile.
But the Encore Turntable output  sounded terrible and I have a decent setup “Receiver & Speakers”. The voices sounded like cardboard and lacked all bass no matter how hard I cranked the bass on my sub or my receiver which the one I have is known for heavy bass could barely get a thump out of Beastie Boys License to ill.

I spent the last year reading about different tables I knew I did not need a high end model so had my eye on a few that were in the $150-$200 range.
It finally came down to the Audio Technica models these got great reviews for the low end models as well as the mid and high end models.
I started eye balling the Audio-Technica AT-LP60 which was selling at the $150 range for some time and was getting stellar reviews regarding its sound quality stating it matched up to the $500 tables out there easily.
Then come March low and behold there I see one on E-bay for $78 it sold before I decided to buy it.
They were selling from $99.99 to $120 so I check out Best Buy and they have this deck on sale for an awesome price of $89.99. Amazon or E-bay could not match price at the time I was buying. And I could now go locally to get it and have it in me hands in less than an hour.

Which I did yes I picked it up but my children paid for it so awesome I love them!!
It required some assembly.
It is a solid Table the platter is aluminum has a built in Pre-Amp that can be turned on or off. Which is amazing and plays 33 and a 3rd speed and 45rpm and comes with a 45 adapter.
78rpm is not on this model the LP120 models offer 78s but you won’t be finding any recent albums running at 78 anyhow. My old player did offer all 3-33,45 & 78 but that matters not when the sound you get is sub-par.
The arm can be set for 12″ or 7″ this way it known where to bring the arm down since you don’t set the arm manually the player does this for you and does a great job at it.
Never a single scratch noise stopping or starting.
The dust cover can be removed which is great most of them don’t offer the dust cover to be removed.

This table sounds amazing! If your looking to get into vinyl and want to listen to them the way they should be heard start with the LP60.
It sounded so good it blows CD away I couldn’t say that before with that Encore Turn Table I was using.

Backyard outside Home Theater on the cheap.

Most important thing in making a outdoor theater is the projector these can be expensive but since this is on the CHEAP. I went with a model that was CHEAP! but also has a decent enough picture quality and large enough projection size  up to 150″ to be enjoyable.
150″= 12.5′ x 6.1′ that shit is huge and this posting makes is HUGELY CHEAP!!!
And it also handles HD as well 720 or 1080i or p. That is at a minimum you will want an HD projector these days the prices are at a excellent point for HD models. UltraHD /4k Projectors are very expensive.

The model I went with was a Walmart special can be bought online at the normal retailers like Amazon or Newegg.

This was on sale for $89 we had a discount and got it for $82 but I did see they are selling refurbished models for $48.37 can go this route if your looking to go UBER CHEAP!!
And free shipping too.
You don’t have to get the same one I did shop about see if there si something better in same price range or a little more.

The next thing you will need is a screen to watch it on in the place you decide is large enough to put up the screen and allow 10 or more people to sit about lounging watching your CHEAP!! outdoor theater.
Don’t be a dunce make sure your placing your UBER CHEAP screen where there is no street lights beaming on it. Because more light will really lessen the effect of your CHEAP Theater.
Also decide if you want one you can pull down easily or if it’s just fine becoming a backyard ornament.
There are screens you can make with wood and paint the plywood white and project to that. There are also Blow up screens available.  These you will not find on the CHEAP!!
I went with good ole Ebay for my screen shopping and decided on building a frame for it. Frame equals less wood, less wood equals CHEAP!
Name it went by on listing  16:9 150” Portable 3D Manual Hanging Projector Screen Home Video Projection US paid $47 for it that included shipping SUPER CHEAP!!
It’s now selling for $49.99 or make offer. Don’t think he will go lower than $47 I tried $45 ended up countering at $47 and change.

The frame is something you will have to look at even after you pull the screen from it when your finished watching movies outside.
You can use house paint you have around the house or even spray paint you may have laying about.
To keep this on the CHEAP you don’t want to spend any extra on paint so settle for a color you can live with that you already have in your garage or shed.
Or if you don’t hit up Dollar General they sell spray paint the CHEAPEST! at $2.47 a can you can’t beat it keep in  mind since DG paint is so damn CHEAP! it’s runny and may require an extra layer of spray.
Or you can do Walmart and pay $3.67 a can and not have a runny CHEAP can of paint that requires 2 coats.
CHEAP is good but if that CHEAP is gonna cost ya in the end avoid it.

Tools needed:
Skill Saw  “If you don’t own one use a saw or even better get a friend to bring his Skill saw. Act like you don’t know how to use it.  Have him cut the wood for you CHEAP!!”
Drill/Driver tool
Measuring Tape
Wood nails
Wood screws

The wood I used 2×4’s for the frame it is to be treated for outdoors.
Since I went with 150″ screen it required 4-10ft 2×4’s  2-12ft 2×4’s.
I realize that the screen is 12.5 ft but the wood lays flat so it gives you an extra 7″ which is needed for the black boarder around the screen.
You will want your screen to mount as tightly as possible to remove any wrinkles in the white projection area.

Home Depot
Wood is weather shielded
12ft 2×4= $8.47 x2= $16.94
10ft 2×4= $6.88 x4= $27.52

Lowes
Wood is weather shielded
12ft 2×4= $8.22 x2= $16.44
10ft 2×4= $6.67 x4= $26.68

As you can see the prices are close but if your wanting CHEAPEST LOWES WINS!!
Remember to measure everything even your screen before cutting your wood to spec.
You will need to get curved braces for both sides of the frame they cost $2 each at Home Depot
Will also need 2-4 straight braces for the Braces you’ll place behind the frame these cost about $2.50 each. Don’t want wind blowing down your new Theater do you?

The 10ft 2×4’s are used for the Screen and will be dug into ground 2ft after frame is completed.
Here is what it should look like after you have completed the frame and put into the ground.
Front view screen

Remember the sizes of wood I used were if you were building a 150″ screen frame if larger or smaller you would possibly have to buy different sizes.
The 10Ft 2x4s go 2ft into the ground and the other 2 10ft 2×4’s are behind the screen bracing it from weather like wind.
Frame braces

The braces are not buried into the ground and since I put it closely to our house I will use 2- loop hooks to mount a chain to the frame and to the house to brace it as well this will ensure it’s safe from wind both directions.
On the back I use a tarp that is partially reflective “Black or dark Blue” this is to trap any light that escapes from behind the screen when projecting a movie from the front.
Note: Use 2 tarps make sure they over lap in the center this will allow wind to pass through and keep it from ripping even on light winds. And use 2 rope in an X pattern behind the tarps this will hold the tarps and not allow them to just blow as far back will brace the tarp somewhat. Take a look at the picture of the frame and tarp from behind you will see the X pattern from the ropes bracing the tarps .
You can choose to paint your frame before the bury or after it really doesn’t matter since the wood is weather proof and will last some time.
I later painted my frame Black and mounted my miller Light bottle Lights around the frame and built a small stand that goes under the frame for sound system.
This brings us to a sound system.

You can opt to skip this step completely and just use the sound that comes from the RCA projector.
While it’s sound is decent. When outside with talking and other night time sounds this probably won’t be enough.
You can use spare PC speakers that you have on it or you can use a sound bar or a receiver with Speakers it’s up to you and what your willing to spend on this venture.
Since I went a bit off the CHEAP here I still didn’t pay all that much for the sound system.
I already owned a pair of outdoor speakers which I mounted to the side of the frame.
I did have a few spare receivers but were being used by other setups or my son.
And also had a spare Blu-ray player that was never being used. If you only have a spare DVD player use that as well also keep in mind the RCA projector has a USB port that you can watch movies from using a USB thumb drive Divx and other formats are supported this way.
Which left me in need of a receiver since this is outside I do not need surround sound I just need raw sound in stereo.
Which first should be looked for locally in thrift shops or local Goodwill if you can’t find a decent working one there try pawn shops and then lastly go to Ebay.
I found an old Kenwood 103AR Receiver 50 watts per channel and handles 4 channels.
got this on Ebay for $40 free shipping not as cheap as my Garage Pioneer I got for $20 but $40 is still CHEAP!!

Seating
There are many things you can do for seating lawn chairs blankets or can even build your own it’s up to you it’s your backyard theater you can change or make this how ever you like.

Popcorn and treats are a must as well everyone likes that stuff and if your 21 or older pack those coolers with BEER! Just NOT CHEAP BEER YOU’LL SHIT YOUR PANTS IN THE AM.

In all seriousness in total this project only ended up costing me  $263.82 Included Projector, screen, wood, paint, brackets, sound system,25ft hdmi cable from Amazon $7.
Nails and screws I already had so these will cost you another $10-$20 for big boxes can use the leftovers on some seating or stands your going to build for your outdoor theater.
Note: The math for total spent is give a few bucks take a few bucks but it is under $300.

Since this isn’t a top of the line projector you will only want to start watching at dark.
The picture quality is really good for the price range I was completely impressed by how good the quality I was getting on a almost 13 foot screen. I expected so little that when I saw it I was surprised. That isn’t a bad thing it really does get good quality and is LED based 50,000 hour use that is a lifetime for us. We don’t watch TV outside every night.
And everyone that came and joined us that night neighbors and all  loved it.

Here it is finished painted with lights on but haven’t started movie yet. You can see the bench I built with some spare wood for the Receiver and Bluray player.

20180309_191643[1]

To those that are willing to try and do it. I had a great time building and getting this together more so than watching movies after.
And my kids like it as well which brings me more joy than the project it self. My kids range from 20’s to 17 so if you have younger kids this thing will look like a house to them. And get plenty of family nights in the fresh air.

I am debating on building a platform bleacher type seating using pallets.
This is a challenge for another day or maybe year who knows maybe this week?
If you have done this please feel free to post a link to in in the messages.

Forgotten item where to place your projector.
I use a old tri-pod that we had packed away and placed boards on the ground to keep it some what level even though I can adjust that with the tri-pod.
Would rather make small adjustments to height each leg than major adjustments.
You’ll want the projector on a stable table or tri-pod to ensure it doesn’t hit the ground. I hear it’s pretty tough from reviews heard it can take a bit of a beating. But I’m not willing to give that a try.
So you’ll need a small table that is at least 3-4ft off the ground a tripod you can adjust height I felt this was an easier path 1st time I used it was on a chair with a few books it was a mess.

The projector I use the RCA is about 14-16feet away from the screen to project a 150″ image. The smaller the screen the closer it will be and better quality as well.
For best image quality on the RCA I’d say 100″-120″ is the sweet spot 150″ still looks really good though.
Every projector is different and remember brighter the Lumens doesn’t always mean better every brand uses different technology so keep that in mind when shopping and read plenty of reviews from people that actually own it.
Especially on the cheaper projectors brighter can mean less contrast less contrast means less detail.

Settings I use that seem best at 150″ after dark.
Contrast 90
Brightness 40 “setting this to high will get a brighter picture but much less detail”
Temperature Warm

Color Default
Sharpness 40-60 “Turning lens is not same but is used for focusing and will effect sharpness”
On Televisions I prefer Cool setting for temperature but I find Warm to be best on this projector.
Seems to me the projector pushes blues while LCD or OLED push red more so than Blues. This is why Temp setting is best warm.
Mess with these settings to get the best picture quality you can harness out of it.

Back to VR “The Climb”

I’m gaming again in VR this time I got a hold of the game created by Crytek using the Cryengine  called The Climb.
This game has had a premium price tag of $49.99 and has stayed at that price point for the last year. That is until Oculus Store had a daily deal and snapped it up for a mere $9.99!
In this game you use your touch controllers to grip and climb mountains from different areas around the world.

I’ve only climbed the 1st mountain and let me tell you it is really an awesome experience.
My arms actually get tired from reaching and stretching to grab that ledge around the bend of the mountain.
If you have the Rig to crank up those settings do it! The views are amazing and when looking down you really feel like your high up on a mountain hanging with 1 hand.
It’s important you dust your hands for extended hang times it’s not very much extended but that little bit could mean life or death.
You gets stars at end of your climb which can open a new mountain for you to conquer.
Depends on if you climb faster and other goals they will give for you to achieve.

If you have an Oculus this is really a must get game it’s seriously that cool I dare say it’s even worth $50 which is rare of me to say since I think PC games should never exceed $39.99.
While I do think it was a Oculus Rift exclusive title it does work with the HTC Vive as far as I know. Does the Vive need any mods to get it working or does it work out of the box? This I’m not sure of but I do know I’ve seen video of others playing The Climb on the Vive and looked nice and smooth no different than the Oculus.

Here are some screens that I have downloaded they are not screens I took myself.

Aside from finding and playing this wonderful game there are a few other honorable mentions. The games I list here are ones I play regularly in VR and are worth playing and purchasing.

Arktika.1
This is another Oculus exclusive and it may work with the HTC Vive do a look about to see if this can be done or if it’s supported.
This is a straight up shooter you weild guns that you can upgrade with the credits you earn after each mission.
Let me just say in this list the new DOOM VFR isn’t listed why? Well because it plain sucked ass in comparison to Arktika.1. Check out the home page:

Spartaga
This is a bullet hell game where you control your ship with your hand of choice left or right.
Challenge is to stay alive get combos dodge like hell and shoot down everything you see above you below you and even in your face.
It gets adrenaline flowing and some anger as well. lol
Great game if you liked Xortex 26xx or Galaxis Wars or Chamber 19 then this game will be for you.
